Applying Model Driven Architecture in Practice A Counterpoint to Mr. Fowler and Mr. Ambler Jon Kern and Lee Faus, Compuware Many who attended recent meetings featuring industry notables Martin Fowler and Scott Ambler came away with the opinion that MDA was far too complex for real world application development and that a reasonable visual modeling tool was probably unachievable. COOUG likes controversy, so we found an author of The Agile Manifesto, Jon Kern, and his associate, Lee Faus, "UML for the Rest of Us", who travel in the same circles as Mr. Fowler and Mr. Ambler, but who take a somewhat contrarian view. This will be a "no hype" presentation. Jon Kern acknowledges the complexity of UML, but will demonstrate that a pragmatic "distilled" usage has high project value when combined with visual tool support. He will discuss where UML and MDA overlap, precision through UML profiles, and will dismiss the "Silver Bullet" theory that often accompanies design tools. Jon will emphasize three keys to software development success: -- Separation of concerns (It's the business!) -- Duality of Architecture -- Agile development Lee Faus will join in with additional real world experiences and a brief MDA tool demonstration using OptimalJ and a Q&A session. Attendees can expect a raucous, stimulating, controversial, .. and fun meeting. Jon Kern,
now at Compuware, is an author of
The Agile Manifesto, a co-author of
Java Design, and a major contributor to TogetherSoft’s early success. He was Director of Mentoring at TogetherSoft, responsible for developing and hiring
other mentors, creating workshop materials, and delivering mentoring services. As a Coad-Certified Mentor, Jon
provided advanced training in Object Modeling, Feature-Driven Development methodology, and provided custom mentoring
services to small teams of developers. Jon has 15+ years of experience from jet engine R&D, to real-time flight
simulators, to developing IBM’s manufacturing system, to leading TogetherSoft’s development and QA teams (in Russia). Lee Faus,
now at Compuware, consults on MDA/OptimalJ implementations across the country for many clients. Lee started his
career teaching OOAD and C++ in public schools. He later worked as a professional technical trainer teaching
Microsoft, Novell, and Sun Java Courses. Lee went on to GemStone Systems as a Systems
Engineer helping customers understand the J2EE specifications. He was later recruited by TogetherSoft to become
a mentor and help share his knowledge about Java and J2EE. We wrote
