Barbara has been on COOUG's wish list for quite some time.   An expert on data architecture and business rules, Barbara drew an audience very involved with business rule systems and business rule products.

Her talk covered: 

  • Relationship of rules to OO concepts and practices.
  • New rule modeling, analysis, artifacts, and deliverables.
  • Real experiences with products such as Blaze Advisor, modifying client, UML, and RUP artifacts to accomodate the new rule deliverables.
  • Options in rule repository selection.
  • Industry "best practices" today for business rule analysis, technology, management, and automation.

Barbara plays many roles in her consulting company, from strategic planning, engagement management, to career development of employees.
She is best known for pioneering in the world of Data Architecture and Business Rules through writings and consulting work. She has been responsible for business rule  methodology on consulting assignments. In 1996, she received the honored Outstanding Individual Achievement Award from the International Data Management Association. For over 5 years, she was a leading contributing editor for Database Programming and  Design magazine. She co-authored The Handbook of Relational Database Design, and co-edited The Handbook of Data Management. Most recently, she authored the book Business Rules Applied (Wiley & Sons, 2002) which provides a step-by-step approach for adding a business rules perspective and, optionally rules technology, to today’s systems development approaches. Her major responsibility for KPI is to coordinate development of methodologies and ensure that KPI is capable of delivering services using those methodologies.
