SPEAKER:

Joe Garrity

Architect

The Hartford

ABOUT THIS SESSION:

The Hartford, one of the largest investment and insurance companies in the United States, considered four years ago to take insurance guidelines hard-coded into legacy COBOL programs and externalize them to a rules engine. Since then, the company has chosen a rules engine, selected a pilot project, staffed and implemented the project and identified future opportunities. This presentation will discuss the lessons learned, whether the initial objectives were met and what the future holds for implementing applications involving rules engines at The Hartford. What you will learn:

o        What did and didn't work for the first rules-based application implementation

o        How to avoid some mistakes

o        Proper expectations and objectives to establish

ABOUT THE SPEAKER(s):

Joe Garrity is a seasoned information technology professional whose career has spanned many different technologies within the financial services software industry over the past 25 years. He has been involved with implementing rules engine applications for the past 10 years.

SPEAKER:

David A. DeCrescente

Director

St. Paul Travelers

ABOUT THIS SESSION:

In a business rules management system, the business rules should be completely owned, managed and implemented by the business owners. To realize that ideal, the business needs methods and tools to manage rules and some of the resulting shifts in roles and responsibilities. This presentation does not address rule semantics, mining or organization. It is appropriate for both IT and business audience members. What you will learn:

o        Why the business side, and not IT, should control rules throughout their life cycle

o        What methods and tools the business needs to get 100% control of rules

o        How to deal with organizational changes this shift in control will necessitate

ABOUT THE SPEAKER(s):

David DeCrescente has over 20 years of experience in IT applications development. For the past 5 years, he was responsible for home-grown rule applications and the challenges they reveal. Most recently, he led a team including systems integrators to develop and implement a state-of-the-art business rules system that enables the business side to own 100% of the business rules.
